While in Dhaka, beware of precision mobile snatching

This representative photo shows a CNG-run three-wheelers which are a popular public transport and targets of snatchers. Star file photo

You can’t believe how fast they snatch; you’re the prey in a flash! You won’t believe how sharp their eyes are, like an eagle, eager to strike.

No matter how hard you grip your mobile phone, you’ll lose it even while seated inside a CNG baby-taxi… it will be gone in a flash.

I’ve always wondered how the culprits know what phone you are using, an expensive smartphone or a run-of-the-mill basic set.

On that terrible night, the street was busy with traffic as usual and the street shops nearby were open for frantic Eid shoppers

There was a human-hauler coming from opposite direction on the wrong side of the road, brazenly violating traffic laws to my utter disgust and disappointment.

Traffic movement was slow, considering the turn on the road and number of vehicles at that point.

I was passing by the intersection near Sezan Point shopping complex with one of my colleagues in a CNG baby-taxi after work ended at 11:30pm last night.

At that time, I was to my frustration quite absent-minded. In the blink of an eye, my mobile phone was snatched from my grasp by someone who cut open the overhead hood of the CNG.

However, I believe there are more people involved in the planning and execution of this daring job… it can’t be a lone criminal, there must be a gang!

I was shocked at how fast it all happened.

After getting down, we found no one to catch, although the street was full of people and some of them saw a person running away.

With a heavy heart, I would like to advice you not to use your mobile phone in public places carelessly and don’t be so engrossed in it.

Be safe with your belongings ahead of Eid.
