Heavy downpour, water logging disrupt city life

Commuters have been suffering as many thoroughfares of Dhaka city have gone under water due to heavy rainfall owing to active monsoon over Bangladesh.

The rain is expected to continue for the next four to five days, said Arif Hossain, a meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Following the heavy rain that started last night, water logging was observed on various roads in Green Road, Tejturi Bazar, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and other low-lying areas.

The entire country is witnessing heavy rainfall, with 55mm rainfall recorded in Dhaka in the last 24hrs till 6:00am today, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

From 6:00am to 12:00pm, another 2mm rain was recorded in Dhaka, said Arif Hossain.

Meanwhile, the highest rainfall—110mm-- was recorded at Feni.

City dwellers suffered mostly due to lack of motor vehicles and rickshaws in many parts of the city, while many roads saw severe traffic congestion.

The Bangladesh Met office, also issued a heavy rainfall warning: “Due to active monsoon heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy (>89 mm) rainfall with gusty wind is likely to occur at places over Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet divisions during next 24hrs commencing at 11:00am today.”

The warning further added, “due to very heavy rainfall landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.”
