Landslide deaths: Condolence at parliament

The parliament has expressed deep shock at the loss of lives including those of four army men in the hilly districts of Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban.

At the start of sitting today, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury informed parliament that the last two days’ rain triggered a series of landslides in hilly areas including Chittagong.

She added, four army personnel engaged also fell victim to the landslide during rescue operation. "They were working there to rescue the victims, but a fresh landslide buried them.”

Speaker Shirin Sharmin conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families of the victims and those who suffered injuries. She also prayed for the salvation of the departed souls.

Up so far, the death toll in yesterday’s landslide, today’s fresh landslide in Cox’s Bazar and flash flood has risen to 139 in four districts of the Chittagong division.

Search is underway and fears are on that the toll may rise.
