Budget 2017-18: Education gets a boost

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has proposed for an allocation of Tk 50,432 crore in the budget for 2017-18 fiscal for education, which is 12.6 percent of the total budget size.

Placing the Tk 4,00,226 crore budget at a full house, the minister laced importance to improving the quality of education to groom the human resource of the country.

Of the total allocation for the sector, Tk 23,141 crore has been allocated for Ministry of Education, Tk 22,022 crore for the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, and Tk 5,269 crore for Technical and Madrasa Education Division.

The proposed allocation for education has gone up by 14 percent compared to last fiscal.

“The government always attaches priority to investing in education, and has plans to build ICT based interactive classrooms in 503 model primary schools with a view to enhancing both capacity and quality in primary education sector,” Muhith said.

Also, there is a plan to undertake two projects at the cost of Tk 14,864 crore to create appropriate learning environment in existing and nationalised schools, Muhith said.
