Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today warned of exemplary punishment for the people, who were involved in the attack on Hindu community in Thakurpara village of Rangpur on Friday.

“It was a heinous crime. We will ensure exemplary punishment of those involved in the crime,” Kamal said while talking to reporters at a function at the Ramna Police Conversion Centre this afternoon.

A man was killed and 20 others were hurt after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells as violence flared up in the village on November 10, over the alleged Facebook post “demeaning Islam.”

Referring to the similar incident that took places in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria earlier, Kamal said, “We are being condemned by different quarters for such type of attack.”

“It is a sub-judicial matter. I don’t want to make any comments in this regard but I can say, it may be outcome of conspiracy,” the home boss said without blaming any quarter.

Responding to a query over Rangpur attack, Kamal said, “The attackers went on the rampage suddenly. Our law enforcers have failed to resist them as they could not be prepared immediately.”

He said the law enforcement agencies are keeping close vigilance at all strategic places across the country to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

A case was also filed with police accusing 2,000 people on Saturday. More than 60 people were detained in connection with the case.
