The High Court today issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to take necessary steps for ensuring security of the judges and at the court premises across the country.

In the rule, the court also asked the government to show cause why its failure to ensure security at the Cumilla court where an accused was stabbed to death should not be declared illegal

The High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by supreme court lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan seeking necessary order in this regard.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Ishrat Jahan on July 16 filed a writ petition with the High Court demanding measures to ensure security of judges as well as courts across the country.

A murder accused was stabbed to death by another right before a judge and police members inside a packed courtroom in Cumilla on July 15.

The incident exposed the lack of security at the court, lawyers said after the murder.
