'Clash over land' leaves 2 dead in Sylhet

Two people were shot dead and another 30 injured in a clash over alleged land dispute in Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet this morning.

The deceased has been identified as Ali Ahmed and Rumel Ahmed of Mitrimahal village, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting Anisur Rahman Khan, assistant superintendent(ASP) of Sylhet district Police.

Two groups of villagers of Mitrimahal and Bahar village locked in an altercation on Friday night over some land of Salutikor Mosque, the official said.

Following the altercation, a rural settlement was planned on Saturday morning and during the meeting the clash started in Mitrimahal, the ASP said.

The ASP said that a former chairman of local union council opened fire with his licenced gun which left two people dead on the spot.

Police recovered the gun but could not arrest Jamal Uddin, but several others have been detained, ASP Anisur Rahman said adding that additional police have been deployed in the village.
