BCL men demand punishment, termination of CU teacher

Members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University (CU) unit formed a human chain on the campus today demanding punishment and termination of CU teacher Maidul Islam over making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook on July 13.

The BCL group formed the human chain in front of CU Bangabandhu Chattar around 1:30pm, reports our university correspondent.

On June 23, Md Ifterkhar Uddin Ayaz, a former executive member of CU unit BCL, filed the case under against Maidul Islam under section 57 of ICT Act on with Hathazari Police Station.

In the case statement, he mentioned that Maidul has defamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post, on July 13.

Maidul in his defence however said that he never wrote that derogatory remarks against the premier.

The sociology teacher, left the campus along with his family members on July 15 after BCL men issued public threats to him and his family.

He later notified the matter to university authorities and sought security from the university administration.

Earlier, BCL men lodged a complaint against Maidul to the department chairperson, and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor against two teachers including him.

Later, the university formed a three-member probe committee to investigate into these allegations, against Maidul and Khandakar Ali Ar Raji, an assistant professor of mass communication and journalism department.
