Two factions of Chittagong College unit Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL), student wing of the ruling party, today locked into a clash over establishing supremacy on the campus, police said.

The two groups -- one led by Mahmudul Karim and the other following Nur Mostofa Tinu -- had long been at loggerheads over taking control of the campus, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting police.

The unruly BCL men, equipped with lethal weapons, got involved in chase and counter-chase around 11:45am, said Zahangir Alam, assistant commissioner of Kotwali zone of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

Police clubbed away the activists and brought the situation under control immediately after the clash ensued, he said.

A tense situation prevailed on the campus before police intervened.

“Today’s clash is a sequel to yesterday’s scuffle between the two groups centering on an orientation programme organised for the first year honours students,” Zahangir Alam said.
