Student protest continues for 9th day
Dr Md Torequl Islam, assistant proctor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj, resigned from all administrative posts protesting the recent attacks on the students and “inaction” of the administration.
Dr Md Torequl Islam is an assistant professor at the pharmacy department of the university.
in his resignation letter, Torequl Islam said he waited for the authorities to take action after allegations surfaced against the vice chancellor over the attacks on the students. He decided to resign as the authorities did not take any action against those responsible for the attacks and also took no measures for ensuring student safety, he added.
Earlier, another assistant proctor, lecturer Humayun Kabir, resigned from the post protesting the attacks on the students on September 21.
He also filed a general diary (GD) with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station on September 24 seeking security of life claiming some VC-backed teachers threatened him in person to face dire consequences while some others threatened him on Facebook and spread propaganda against him.
STUDENT PROTEST CONTINUES
Students of the university are continuing their protest in front of the administrative buildings for the ninth consecutive day today.
Some of them are also continuing their fast-unto-death programme since September 19 demanding resignation of VC Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin bringing allegations against him of sexual harassment, nepotism in recruiting teachers and other employees, and corruption in development projects, including the construction of the Shaheed Minar and Bangabandhu’s mural on the campus.
The demonstrators said the university authorities suspended students and served show-cause notices to those teachers whose speeches or statements go against them.
Fatema Tuz Zinia, a second-year student of law department and a campus reporter of The Daily Sun, was a victim of suspension for a Facebook post.
Amid countrywide protests, university authorities withdrew the suspension order on September 18.
