Microbus riders abducted an office assistant of Shishu Academy in Babuganj upazila under the district from a road in broad daylight on Friday.

The victim, Abul Kalam Azad, 38, is son of Liakat Ali of Ghataker Char in the upazila.

Azad reached Fire Service Station crossing on Babuganj-Mohanganj road in Babuganj upazila, about one kilometre from his home, on the way to Khanpura around 10:30am on Friday, when some tall unidentified men, wearing genji and pant, from a white microbus waylaid  and forcibly took him onto the vehicle, said Mojammel Hossain, one of the witnesses.

Hearing his hue and cry, local people advanced to rescue him, but the riders of the vehicle with tinted glass introduced themselves as Rab men and left the place with the victim, locals said.

Lt Col Faridul Alam, commanding officer of Rab-8, said, "We did not conduct any drive to arrest anybody in the area and we do not know about the whereabouts of Azad."

Azad's elder brother Alamgir Hossain Alo lodged a case about the alleged abduction on Friday night without mentioning any name of accused, said Shahe Alam, officer in charge of Babuganj Police Station.

Police visited the spot, started investigation and trying their best to rescue the victim, he said.

"Azad is a gentleman and to the best of my knowledge, he was never involved in any crime," said Abdul Matin Hawladar, chairman of local Chandpasha union parishad.
