Condemned convict in 10 truck arms case and former State Minister Lutfozzaman Babar was released on parole for six hours this evening.

“Babar was taken to Dhaka from the jail this morning to be produced before the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka in a case over August 21 grenade attack,” said Subrata Kumar Bala, senior jail super of Kashimpur Central Jail-1.

He was released on parole around 6:30 pm from Dhaka for six hours for attending the namaj-e-janaza of his mother at a mosque in Gulshan area of the capital.

He will be taken back to the jail after six hours, added the jail super.

Babar’s mother passed away last night at a city hospital.

On January 30 in 2014, the Chittagong Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 sentenced 14 persons, including Babar, to death on charges of their involvement in the smuggling of 10 truckloads of arms into Bangladesh.

The consignment was intercepted on April 2, 2004, from the jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited.
