AL to mark ‘triumph of democracy’ day Jan 5

Ruling Awami League will herald the looming January 5 as the day when “democracy triumphed” in corroboration of the anniversary of last general elections.

The party has drawn a chart of programmes to mark the day – with gala demonstration in two places at Dhaka – to highlight the third anniversary of the elections.

Besides, similar programmes will be held throughout all the districts and upazilas of Bangladesh, a joint meeting of the Awami League decided this afternoon.

“January 5 heralds the sequel of democracy in Bangladesh,” the party’s Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Haque Hanif told The Daily Star after the meeting.

On that day, two demonstrations will be held in Dhaka – one in Russel Square of Dhanmondi and the other near the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue office, he said.

The last parliamentary election was held in Bangladesh on January 5, 2014 – an election that faced much debate after main opposition BNP boycotted the polls.

In the first anniversary of the elections, the country’s political setting heated up once again after Awami League wanted to observe the day as “victory of democracy” day and BNP to observe it as “a black day when democracy was killed”.
