ACC sues Bera municipality mayor, 14 others for graft

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed another case against Bera municipality mayor and 14 others on charge of embezzling government fund.

Md Jalal Uddin, deputy assistant director of ACC in Pabna, filed the case with Bera Police Station on Monday night.

The accused include, Mayor Md Abdul Baten, municipality Assistant Engineer Firozul Alam, Councillors Habibur Rahman, Abu Daud Sheikh, Joynal Abedin, Samsul Haque Khan, Nargis Akter, Jakia Khatun and Mahbub Hossain Bablu, leaseholder of Karamza Haat.s

The commission, on Thursday, filed two separate cases against the mayor and 12 others, said Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station.

According to the case statement, the mayor and his men leased Karamza Haat at C&B Bazar in the upazila for Tk 6.78 lakh but embezzled the money instead of depositing it to the government fund.

The case statement also says that the accused have been occupying the haat for the last 13 years as if it were their personal property and did not even deposit the lease money.

Despite repeated attempts, the mayor could not be reached for his comment as his mobile phone was found switched off.
