Severe gridlock on Dhaka-Chittagong highway
Dhaka-Tangail traffic condition improves; 5km tailback at Paturia ghat
Holiday-makers are suffering immensely as there has been a severe gridlock on Dhaka-Chittagong highway since morning.
Due to the upsurge of home-bound people, Shimulia-Kawrakandi ferry service is failing to cope with the situation. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded at Shimulia end.
Many were seen to cross the mighty Padma with speed boats and launches to reach home hurriedly risking their safety.
Mosharraf Hossain, in-charge of Mawa police outpost, said around 70 buses, 400 light vehicles and some trucks were in queue.
Meanwhile, there has been a mad rush of home-goers on Dhaka-Chitagong highway for the last three days. A 9-kilometre-long tailback was created from Meghna Bridge to Meghna-Gomoti Bridge at Daudkandi area, reports our correspondent.
As the Eid day is coming closer, the traffic load has increased manifolds. The gridlock at Daudkandi part of the highway has almost become unmanageable, said police Sergeant Kamaruzzaman Raj, in-charge of Bhaber Char highway police check post.
Dhaka-Tangail traffic condition improves
However, the traffic situation of Dhaka-Tangail highway has improved now. Due to excessive pressure of traffic, the vehicles are moving slowly but the tailback that was created earlier has eased to a great extent, reports our Tangail correspondent.
Khalilur Rahman Patwari, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway police outpost, said they have deployed 700 police personnel to facilitate the movement traffic.
They are trying their best to ease the sufferings of the holiday-makers, the OC added.
5km tailback at Paturia ghat
Hundreds of trucks, buses and small vehicles were seen lined up on the highway to a five-kilometre tailback at Paturia ferry terminal at around 2:30pm today.
Thousands of passengers, who are on the way to home to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha, suffer immensely due to the traffic jam, reports our local correspondent.
15 ferries out of 19 are constantly carrying vehicles from all four ghats, said sources at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha.
