8 gamblers jailed

A mobile court here yesterday sentenced eight gamblers to 10 days' imprisonment each in Hatibandha upazila of the district.

The gamblers are Saidul Islam, Shafiqul Islam, Nuruzzaman Mia, Faridul Islam, Delwar Hossain, Rezwan Islam, Abdullah Al-Mamun and Khokon Mia. They all hail from different villages in the upazila.

Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station, said a police team, acting on a tip-off, arrested the eight while they were gambling on a boat in the Teesta River near South Doyabari village yesterday noon.

The arrestees were later produced before the mobile court, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahbubur Rahman, also the executive magistrate. After hearing, the magistrate delivered the verdict.
