Man killed in Jessore mob beating over ‘rape, murder’ of 70-yr old woman

An alleged rapist and murderer of a 70-year old woman was killed today in mob beating in Jessore Sadar upazila.

The deceased Iradat Hossain, 27, son of Habib Khan of Jagannathpur village in the upazila, allegedly killed a 70-year old woman after raping her, Haiyat Mahmood, officer-in-charge of Bashundia Police Outpost, told our local correspondent.

Iradat allegedly strangled Mehrunnesam 70, wife of Mateleb Khan of the same village, to death after raping her on Monday evening when the victim went to Iradat’s house to cook rice.

After the murder, Iradat kept the body in a plastic sack hidden in his kitchen, the OC said. 

Neighbours suspected Iradat after not being able to find the old woman. In the face of interrogation by the locals, he confessed to the crimes and the angry people beat him seriously.

Later, local people found the body of Meherunnesa and informed the police.

Police rushed injured Iradat to Jessore General Hospital, where the on duty doctor declared him dead around 12:30am, the OC said.

Police also recovered the body of the old woman and sent it for autopsy this morning, reports our Benapole correspondent.

Iradat Hossain was accused in a case for killing a fifth-grader after rape a year ago, the police official informed.

“Iradat was out on a High Court bail in the case,” he added.
