50 hurt as villagers clash in Habiganj

At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in Habiganj Sadar upazila yesterday.

Locals said there was a longstanding dispute between Shamim Mia and Ayat Ali of Hurgaon village over various issues.

The clash took place as Shamim's cattle ate up Ayat's straw that he had put out to dry.

Armed with locally-made sharp weapons, supporters of Shamim and Ayat attacked each other, leaving more than 50 people of both sides injured, locals said.

Habiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Yasinul Haque said police went to the spot and dispersed the rival groups.

Fifteen of the injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital in serious condition, while the rest were treated at the local upazila health complex.

Ten people were arrested over the issue.
