5 killed in Ctg road crash

At least five people including a woman were killed as a covered van rammed a passenger bus in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong this morning.

The deceased are: Syed Ahmad, 55, general manager of Karnafuli Paper Mills, Mohammad Ali, 40, Suhrawardy , 60, Shahida Akhter, 23 and Tawkir Tajammul Shusmit, 22, our correspondent from Chittagong reports quoting police.

The accident took place on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Khaiyachhara area around 5:30am as the covered van hit the bus of Shyamoli Paribahan stuck in mud near a filling station due to rain, said Sub-Inspector Farid Uddin, in-charge of Jorarganj Highway Outpost.

Among the victims, four people died on the spot as they were waiting outside for another bus, he said.

Shahida was pronounced dead after she was taken to a local private hospital, he added.

Of the deceased, Ali is the supervisor of the bus. Drivers of both the vehicles managed to flee the scene, Farid said.
