Detectives this evening detained five suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and recovered nine grenades from their possession in Chittagong.

The Detective Branch of police also seized a pistol, 120 rounds of bullets, 20 knives and some bomb-making materials in the drive launched at Hajji Noor Ahmed Tower on College road of the port city.

Police identified the detainees as Mahbub, 37, Kajal, 40, hailing from Noakhali, Suzan alias Babu, 28, from Jhenaidah, Fuad, 33, from Gobindaganj and Javed from Mirersharai upazila of Chittagong, reports our local correspondent.

Acting on a tip-off, the detectives detained Mahbub, Kajal, Suzan and Fuad by launching raids at different places in the port city, said Babul Akter, additional deputy commissioner (Detective Branch) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

Following their confessional statement, the law enforcers carried out a drive on the ground floor of the five-story building and picked up Javed, a textile engineer for his alleged link with the banned militant outfit, he added.

CMP’s bomb disposal unit has already visited the spot to carry out farther search in and around the building for more explosives there, the DB official said.
