40 workers hurt in clash with cops in Ashulia

At least 40 workers of an Otobi furniture factory were injured today during a clash with police in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital.

The clash ensued around 3:00pm when the workers were demonstrating in front of their factory in Khajan area, demanding their two months' arrears, said SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station.

As the agitating workers vandalised several shops and hurled brick chips at the law enforcers, police charged batons, fired several rounds of rubber bullets and teargas canisters, leaving at least 40 workers injured, our Savar correspondent reports quoting the OC.

The injured were given primary treatment at different local hospitals.

Factory workers alleged that the factory authorities did not pay their due salaries of two months despite repeated calls.

Our correspondent could not reach the Otobi authorities despite repeated attempts.
