3 MMC students suspended over clash on campus

Undergraduate level classes suspended, students asked to leave dorm

- Exams, academic activities to continue

- Undergraduate level students to leave dorm by 6:00pm

Authorities today suspended three students of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) for a year for their involvement in a clash on the campus last week.

The suspended students are: Anupam Datta, Himel and Niamat Hossain Siam -- all are second year students, our local correspondent reports quoting Professor Dr Fazlul Haque Pathan, vice principal of the MMC.

The authorities also suspended the classes of undergraduate level for an indefinite period, the vice principal said.  

Professor Dr Anwar Hossain, principal of the MMC, took the decision at an emergency meeting of the academic council today.

Students of the undergraduate level have also been asked to leave their dormitory by 6:00pm today to avoid any further disorder.

However, the authority announced that examinations and other academic activities of the medical college will continue as usual, Pathan said.

Last Wednesday, two groups of students of the medical college locked into a scuffle over a love affair leaving Shahidul Islam, a fifth year student, injured.

A three-member committee to investigate the incident, led by Dr MA Bari, an associate profesor of the college, was formed on Thursday which submitted its report this morning.

Shahidul is now undergoing treatment at the hospital, the pro-VC said.       

Later, both the groups went on carrying out attacks and counter attacks deteriorating law and order situation on the campus, he added.
