Buses veer off road: 11 killed in Tangail, Sylhet

At least 11 people were killed and 26 others injured after two buses veered off the road and fell into roadside ditches in Tangail and Sylhet today.

Death toll is feared to rise in both cases, reports our Tangail and Moulvibazar correspondents.

Humayun Kabir, in-charge of Gorai Highway Police, said eight people were killed and at least 20 people injured in an accident on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Basail upazila of Tangail around 3:30pm.

The driver lost control of the bus while giving side to a bus coming from the opposite direction, the official added.

Among the deceased, one was identified as Jorina Begum, 35. She was on the roof of the bus with her full family – husband Dulal Mia, one son and two daughters, Humayun informed, adding that she hailed from Sherpur.

The other members of the family except the husband were injured, he said.

Meanwhile, at least three people were killed and six others injured after a passenger bus veered off the road in Sylhet’s Osmaninagar upazila this afternoon.

The incident took place on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Brahminshashon road areaaround 1:00pm, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports.

Two women and a man were killed in the crash. However, their identities could not be ascertained immediately, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Mohammad Morsalin, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station, confirmed the casualties and said police had reached the crash site when last reported around 1:55pm.

The driver of the bus managed to flee away.
