Accused Escapes from Court

3 cops suspended

Three policemen were suspended yesterday following an incident in which an accused escaped from the dock of the Satkhira District and Sessions Judge's Court on Wednesday.

They are trainee assistant sub-inspector Akhtarul Islam and constables Abul Hossain and Abdul Alim.

The escapee, Amjad Hossain of Nathpara village in Sadar upazila, who is accused of killing his wife Achhia Khatun, is yet to be caught.

He was produced before the court on Wednesday in handcuffs but he managed to flee from the jam-packed courtroom.

Superintendent of Police of Satkhira (Sadar Circle) Marina Akhter said, "We are taking necessary precautions so that Amjad cannot escape to India by crossing the border."

“Police, on October 16 in 2016, arrested Amjad on charge of killing his wife Achhia Khatun. Later, he gave confessional statement in the court under Section 164,” said advocate Osman Gani, public prosecutor (PP) at Satkhira District and Sessions Judge's Court.

“The date for hearing of the case was scheduled for September 18. It could not be known why Amjad was brought to the court on September 20,” the PP said.

“The court shifted the date of Amjad's case from September 20 to September 18 but the order concerning the changed date did not reach the jail authorities. Attempts are on to arrest the accused,” said Ashraful Bari, court police inspector.
