Case for Torching Polling Centre

23 BNP-Jamaat men land in Nilphamari jail

Twenty-three BNP-Jamaat men were sent to jail yesterday in a case for torching a polling centre in Dimla upazila of the district during the 10th parliamentary elections held on January 5, 2014.

The accused surrendered before the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate AKM Jahangir Alam and sought bail. The judge rejected the bail prayers and sent them to jail.

The Jamaat men are Sattar Ali, ameer of the Dimla upazila unit, and party activists Lutfur Rahman, Mohiruddin, Jewel, Amzad Hossen, Zia, Afsar Ali, Rashidul Islam, Kala Mia, Harun-ur-Rashid, Shariful Islam, Sobdul, Jasiar Rahman, Halimur Rahman, Sahimuddin and Minarul.

The BNP men are Ghato, Sobhan Ali, Abdur Rahim, Shariful Islam Kalta, Aminur Rahman Alam, Shahjahan Ali and Russel Islam.

According to the case statement, BNP-Jamaat men vandalised Dakkhin Goyabari Government Primary School centre and set it afire in the early hours of January 5.

They physically assaulted the presiding and the polling officers and took away ballot papers and ballot boxes from them.

The presiding officer later filed a case with Dimla Police Station, accusing a good number of named and unnamed BNP-Jamaat men.
