20 hurt in clash over taking selfie

At least 20 people were injured when two groups of people clashed over a trifling matter during a wedding function in Sadar upazila on Friday.

Sonarai Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Mostofa Kamal said wedding of Moina Akhtar, 18, daughter of Monwar Hossain of Chhoto Berakuthi village, was scheduled to be held with Saiful Islam, 24, of neighbouring Dinajpur on Friday night. 

When the marriage registration was about to take place, a few youths, accompanying the bridal party, secretly took selfies of some local young girls.

As the girls protested the act, an altercation took place between the relatives and neighbours of both the bride and bridegroom.

At one stage, both the groups attacked each other with wood and bamboo sticks that left 20 people injured, he said.

After the untoward incident, both the families expressed their unwillingness to conduct the wedding, ignoring all advice.
