At least two villagers were shot down and two more hurt while trying to catch robbers in Faridpur’s Charbhadrasan upazila early today.

The deceased were Sazzad Mridha, 37, son of Joher Mridha, and Sentu Mridha, 33, son of Ayen Mridha, all locals, our local correspondent reports.

As obtained from police, a team of about 16-17 bandits stormed a pre-wedding function in a village of Charbhadrasan union around 2:00am and looted gold and other valuables.

The villagers gave them a chase and tried to cut off their escape route, said Charbhadrasan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ramprasad Bhakta.

“They found a speed boat in the river and tried to damage it. But, two robbers who were guarding the boat opened fire on the villagers and shot four people,” he said.

Sazzad died on the spot while Sentu succumbed to his injuries at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. The two others have been taken to Dhaka for better treatment.

Faridpur Medical College’s Ward Master Sazzad Hossain told The Daily Star that Sazzad sustained wounds to his chest and back.

However, no bandits could be caught until last reported.
