11 killed in Dhaka, Ctg, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon road crashes

At least 11 people including an elderly couple were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Chittagong, Dinajpur and Thakurgaon today.

In Dhaka, the elderly couple was killed when a car hit them in Shewrapara area of the capital around 6:30am, said Masud Ahmed, deputy commissioner (Mirpur division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The couple -- Ataur Rahman, 70, and his wife Rawshan Ara, 60 -- died on the spot after the speeding car hit them when they were standing near a road adjacent to Shewrapara bus stand, the police official said.

On information, police recovered the bodies and seized the car from the spot.

In Chittagong, two people were killed when a truck hit a minibus in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong this morning.

The deceased were identified as Palina Namin, 30, of Netrokona district, and Samalal Chandra Pal, 40, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

The accident took place as the Chittagong-bound truck from Dhaka hit the minibus after the trucker lost his control over the steering on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Madanhat area around 6:15am, said Saleh Ahmed Pathan, officer-in-charge of Baro Aulia Highway Police Station.

Palina, a passenger of the bus, and Samalal, a labour of the truck, died on the spot, the police official said.

In Dinajpur, four people including a boy were killed and 30 people injured as it skidded off the road and fell into a ditch in Sadar upazila this afternoon, police said.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident took place at Uttar Gosaipur while the bus was on way to Rangpur from Dinajpur around 2:00pm, our local correspondent reports quoting Redwanur Rahim, officer-in-charge of the district's Sadar Police Station.

The injured people were taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, the OC said.

In Thakurgaon, three people, including a woman, were killed and a minor boy was injured as a minibus hit a pick-up van on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway at Boro khonchabari in Sadar upazila, UNB adds.

The deceased were identified as Ramjan Ali, 60, and Abdul Gaffar, 60, residents of Rajbari village and Rozina Akhter, 22, resident of Prannagar village of the upazila.

Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station, said the Dinajpur-bound minibus hit the speeding pick-up on the highway around 11:00am, leaving its two passengers, Ramjan and Gaffar, dead on the spot and Rozina and her 7-year-old boy injured.

The injured were taken to Adhunik Sadar Hospital where Rozina succumbed to her injuries.
