16 Jamaat, Shibir men arrested

Police in a special drive arrested 16 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its students wing Islami Chhatra Shibir from different upazilas in the district on Sunday night.

Of them, nine were held from Saidpur, Domar and Jaldhaka while four from Dimla, two from Kishorganj and one from Sadar upazila.

The arrestees include Saidpur upazila Jamaat ameer Mahmudul Hasan, 55, Wazed Ali, 40, upazila unit president of Sramik Kallyan Federation, a Jamaat-backed workers' organisation, and Azizul Islam, 40, ameer of Kashiram Belpukur union.

They were arrested on charge of planning subversive activities in the areas, said Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Maruf Hossain.
