Locals today rescued two pythons, a species of large non-venomous snakes, in Faridpur’s Madhukhali and Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazilas.

In Madhukhali, locals rescued the 16-foot-long snake in the early today.

Akram Hossain, a farmer of Borail village in the upazila, spotted the exotic reptile around 2:00am and caught it with the help of other fellow villagers, our Faridpur correspondent reports.

“I saw the python on my way while I was returning home after watching a World Cup match. Later, some other villagers and I caught it and kept it inside a box at my house,” Akram said.

Upon receiving information from the villagers, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mostofa Monoar received the python.

Contacted, the UNO said python is rare in the area, adding that it was handed over to officials of Bangladesh Forest Department around 1:30pm today.

In Gowainghat, another 10-foot-long python, weighing around 40 kilogrammes, was released to Khadimnagar National Park in Sylhet this afternoon, hours after it was rescued from Kachuarpur village in the upazila.

On information, Bashir Ahmed, a member of Khadimnagar Union Parishad rescued the snake from locals who caught the snake in the village and brought it to his home, our Sylhet correspondent reports.

“The snake might have entered the locality due to lack of food. It was very feeble,” Bashir said.

Khadimnagar Forest Beat Officer Chayanbrata Chowdhury, along with other officials of the forest department, received the python from Bashir and released it into the national park, said RFM Monirul Islam, divisional forest officer of Sylhet Forest Division.
