Lightning kills 11 in 7 districts

At least 11 people were killed and two injured in lightning strikes in seven districts of the country today.

Of them, four were killed in Narayanganj while two in Jamalpur and one each in Rajshahi, Rajbari, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Chuadanga.

In Narayanganj, four people were killed and another was injured in lightning strikes in separate incidents.

Obaidul Huq, 30, was killed and Sadek Mia, 49, was injured after they were hit by thunderbolts in Sonargaon upazila, said Morshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station.

In a separate lightning strike, two farmers -- Hashem Molla, 17, and Rafiqul Islam, 33, -- were killed in Rupganj upazila, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station.

Besides, Farhad Sheikh, 14, a student of class-VII, died in Tetlabo area in the upazila, reports our local correspondent.

In Rajshahi, Yakub Ali, 45, of Noupara in Puthia upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him around 7:00am, said Sayedur Rahman Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station, told our Rajshahi staff correspondent.

In Rajbari, a farmer Md Motin Mondol, 45, was killed in a lightning strike in Ghoramara village under Baliakandi upazila around 9:00am, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting family members.

In Sunamganj, Md Yeahia, a farmer from Raipur village under Kanaighat upazila, was killed after he was hit by a thunderbolt in Dakkhin Sunamganj upazila around 11:00am, reports UNB.

In Habiganj, Shamsul Haque, 30, of Japu Kornopara, was killed as a lightning hit him near the Sutki River around 11:00am, UNB adds.

In Chuadanga, Hasibul Islam, 25, a college student, was killed and his father Majedul Islam was injured after they were hit by lightning strike in Kutubpur village under Sadar upazila, BSS reports.

In Jamalpur, two persons were killed by lightning in separate incidents in the district this morning, BSS reports.

The victims were identified as Bakul Miah, 25, son of Sattar Miah of South Chinaduli village in Islampur upazila and Habibur Rahman, 35, son of Alif Uddin of Shyamerpara village in Sarishabari upazila.
