12 more killed during ‘anti-drug war’, toll 96

Twelve more suspected drug peddlers were killed early today during the ongoing countrywide “war on drugs” taking the death toll to at least 96 during the last 13 days.

From what our correspondents and the agencies report, two were killed in Comilla, Pirojpur and Satkhira each, while one each in Jhenidah, Munshiganj, Natore, Dhaka, Pabna and Chandpur.

In Dhaka, a top drug-peddler was killed in a “gunfight” with Detective Branch of police at Chalantika slum of Mirpur.

Deceased Nazrul Islam alias Naju Sarder was accused in 22 cases, according to a text message sent to media by DB.

In Comilla, Nuru, 55, and Enamul Haque Dolon, 40, were killed in two separate “gun battles” with police in Sadar Dakkhin and Debidwar upazilas respectively.

The law enforcers also recovered 60 kg cannabis, 100 pieces yaba, two firearms and two bullets from the two spots after the alleged gunfight, our Comilla correspondent reports quoting Nazrul Islam and Mizanur Rahman, officers-in-charge (OC) of Comilla Sadar Dakshin and Debidwar police stations.

In Pirojpur, two drug-traders were killed in “gunfights” with law enforcers on separate places in Sadar and Mathbaria upazilas, our district correspondent reports quoting the OCs of local police stations

The deceased are Wahiduzzaman, 40, and Mizanur Rahman.

In Satkhira, police recovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two suspected drug peddlers from Agunpur area at Alipur union in Sadar upazila around 6:30am.

One of the deceased was identified as Khalilur Rahman alias Puti Sardar, 40, and the other as Emdadul Karigar, 45, reports the correspondent.

Informed, police later recovered the bodies, Prabir Kumar Das, a sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station, told the correspondent.

In Munshiganj, Sumon Bishwash alias Kana Sumon, an alleged drug peddler, was killed in a “gunfight” with members of a rival group in Sadar upazila, reports our district correspondent quoting OC (Investigation) of Sadar Police Station Gazi Salauddin.

In Jhenidah, Farid Hossain, 25, was killed during a “gun battle” with his rival group over distribution of money at Jargram village under Sadar upazila, OC of Sadar Police Station Emdadul Haque Sheikh told our Jhenidah correspondent.

In Natore, Abdul Khaleque, an alleged drug-trader, was killed in a “shootout” with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Singra upazila, our correspondent reports quoting Assistant Superintendent of Natore Police Azman Khan.

In Pabna, Ejjat Ali Pramanik, 28, an accused in 14 cases, including that of murder, robbery, abduction and extortion, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Teghori Mahalla in Bera municipal area around1:30am, according to UNB.

Zihadul Kabir, superintendent of Pabna police, said police recovered a local shutter gun, four bullets and some drugs from the spot.

In Chandpur, a suspected drug trader, Abu Sayeed Badsha alias Lal Badsha, 45, of Purba Gobindopur village in Faridganj upazila was killed in a reported gun battle with police at Boichatoli around 2:00am.

Shah Alam, OC of Faridganj Police Station, said police recovered 111 Yaba tablets, a single-barrel pistol, three crude bombs and four bullets from the spot adding that Badsha was an accused in 10 cases filed with different police stations.
