10 killed in Mymensingh road crash

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured when a truck carrying them overturned on a road in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh early today.

The deceased were identified as mother Jyostna Begum, 55, and her son Md Shirajul Islam, 18, and five members of a family--Md Azizul Haque, 40, Rezia Begum, 35, Mehedi Hasan, 11, Nayon, 9, and Sizan, 7, Md. Sajahan Hossain, 40, Md Sukur Ali, 65, Khorshed Ali, 25, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

Nine of the bodies were handed over to their families, said Md Mamun Or Rashid, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Police Station.

The cement-laden truck, carrying them, was going to Sherpur from Dhaka. The truck overturned after falling into a pothole on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Meherabari area around 4:00am, leaving nine people dead on the spot, said Md Zahurul Islam, a sergeant of Bharaduba Highway Police.

Several others were also injured in the accident. One of them succumbed to his injuries at Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex later, police said.
