1 killed in Pabna pre-UP polls clash

A man killed and 12 others injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League-backed and rebel candidates over campaigns for the upcoming union parishad (UP) election in Bera upazila of Pabna

A man was killed and 12 others were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League-backed and rebel candidates over campaigns for the upcoming union parishad (UP) election in Bera upazila of Pabna on Saturday night.

Jakir Hossain, assistant superintendent of police of Bera circle, said supporters of AL nominated Korban Ali, president of Dhalarchar union unit of AL, launched an attack on the men of rebel candidate Nasir Uddin Mandol, general secretary of the same unit, during a campaign at Mirpur village in Dhalarchar union at 11:30pm.

A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee.

At one stage, Korban’s supporters opened fire at the men of Nasir, leaving Goher Uddin, 42, son of Pashan Uddin Mandol, a resident of Khayerbagan village, dead on the spot and 12 others injured.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Among the injured, Amir Hamza, 22, Saheb Ali, 70, Alam Mandol, 28, Malek Bepari, 37, Rashid Bepari, 42, Fulel Mandol, 40, and Sohrab Pramanik, 22, were admitted to different clinics and hospitals, the ASP added.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area, the SP added.
