In a report headlined '3 Bangladeshis beaten dead in India' which was published in The Daily Star website on April 6, we misquoted a Bangladesh Border Guard official that the three Bangladeshi citizens were "beaten to death allegedly by members of Indian Border Security Forces".

The report made it clear that locals in Indian state of Tripura captured and beat up to death the Bangladeshi citizens when they went to smuggle cattle.

It quoted Lt Col Saif Uddin Kawsar, commanding officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 14 Battalion in Sreemangal, as saying: "BSF informed us that five Bangladeshi people went to Mazumdertila area inside India to smuggle cattle. Noticing their attempt, the locals captured three of them and beat them to death on the spot while the rest two managed to flee the place."

But the same report attributed to Kawsar the primary information that the three Bangladeshis were beaten to death allegedly by BSF men.

While checking the information later on, we found that Lt Col Saif Uddin Kawsar did not make any statement blaming BSF members for the incident.

We apologise for this and stand corrected.
