The deceased, Ruhul Amin (46) was a nurse at the corona isolation unit of the dedicated Covid-19 hospital in Sylhet, reports our correspondent.

Dr Sushanta Kumar Mahapatro, resident medical officer of the hospital, confirmed that the nurse died at the ICU unit of the hospital around 10:15pm.

It is being suspected that Ruhul was infected while on duty at the vaccine centre of the hospital, the RMO said.

He was also suffering from hypertension, diabetes and some other complications, Dr Sushanta said.

"He was admitted at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital with physical illness and tested positive for Covid-19 on May 21. Then on May 22, he was referred to Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital," he said.

Ruhul Amin is reportedly the first male nurse to die from Covid-19 in the country.

Asked, the RMO said that the hospital staff uses PPE overalls, gloves, goggles and surgical masks while on duty.

"We have sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) for the doctors, nurses and the staffers. But the virus transmission is now in community level and we cannot be sure about how someone is being infected," he said.

"One surgery specialist and seven other nurses of the hospital are also infected with Covid-19 and are undergoing treatment at the hospital," the RMO also said.

A total of 58 patients are currently admitted at the 100-bed hospital, he added.
