A man in Jhenaidah, who earns a livelihood by driving a human hauler, has donated Tk 50,000 which he managed to save all his life to stand beside those who have been hit hard by economic fallout due to coronavirus outbreak.

"I was saving up to build a small house for my family someday. If I manage to stay alive once the crisis is over, there will still be time to earn more money and build a house," Rajkumar Biswas, 52, told The Daily Star.

"There is no certainty whether we will stay alive as the coronavirus is spreading rapidly. So I thought I should rather offer the money for those who are having a hard time now amid the crisis," said the man with a noble heart.

Rajkumar with his wife and one child lives in a makeshift shanty by the side of Nabaganga River in Jhenaidah.

He handed over the money to Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath at 2:00pm today.

"Rajkumar is a human hauler driver by profession and saved this amount by working hard over the years for making a house. But in these trying times, he did not think about himself and instead came forward to stand beside those who are affected. This is a noble deed," DC Saroj Kumar said.

"The district administration salutes him and will honour him for his benevolent act," DC Saroj added.

When asked what the administration itself was doing for the people, DC Saroj Kumar said they have so far distributed relief to over 50,000 people in the district.
