India had another record single-day jump of 26,506 Covid-19 cases, pushing the total so far to 7,93,802, the health ministry data showed today.

The death toll in the last 24 hours till this morning mounted to 21,604 with 475 new fatalities.

The Indian government continued to maintain that there is any community transmission of the virus taking place in the country.

Asked if India has entered the community transmission phase, Rajesh Bhushan, Officer on Special Duty in the health ministry, had said yesterday that "Even today, the health minister (Harsh Vardhan) clearly said that India has not reached the stage of community transmission. In some geographical areas, there have been localised outbreaks."

The number of recoveries from Covid-19 today stands at 49,551, while there are 2,76,685 active cases of the infection across the country, the updated data said, adding this is around 62.42 per cent.

West Bengal reported the highest one-day jump of 1,088 cases taking the state's tally to 25,911 while the death toll stood at 854 with a record 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In view of the rise in the cases, West Bengal authorities clamped a week-long strict lockdown in all the containment zones, which are areas with high caseloads, across the state since yesterday in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Kerala, once considered as a model state to combat the disease, reported the biggest single-day spike of 3,399 cases till yesterday taking the tally to 6,534 and an anxious Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned the state was "very close" to threat of community spread.

Among the worst-hit cities of India, with 162 new cases of coronavirus, Ahmedabad's tally rose to 22,580 and with five more deaths, the toll went up to 1,506.

Mumbai's Covid-19 tally rose to 88,795 with 1,282 new cases in the last 24 hours and 68 fresh deaths during the same period took the fatality count to 5,129.

With 2,187 fresh coronavirus cases, Delhi's infection tally stood at 1,07,051 and the death toll mounted to 3,258.
