Cops attempt to ‘search’ New Age office
Tejgaon Industrial Police this evening attempted to "search" the office of the daily New Age without having any search warrant, but retreated in the face of resistance by the office staff, said journalists of the national daily.
Some 15 to 20 policemen led by Salauddin, officer-in-charge of the police station, tried to enter the office in Tejgaon area of Dhaka around 8:30pm, said Farid Ahmed, chief news editor of the English daily.
"As the policemen reached the reception on the ground floor, some of our colleagues came out and asked about the reason of their appearance," he told The Daily Star.
The OC misbehaved and got into an altercation with the journalists as they wanted to know whether he had any search warrant, Farid said.
Then the policemen left the office.
Contacted, the OC said they went there following information that some Jamaat-e-Islami men gathered on the road near the office centring tomorrow’s countrywide shutdown called by the BNP-led 20-paty alliance.
He, however, denied the accusation of misbehaving with the newspaper staffers.
