Cop murder accused killed in Tangail ‘shootout’

'Criminal' killed in 'gunfight' with Jhenidah police

The prime accused in a case filed for killing a police officer was killed in a “shootout” with law enforcers in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail early today.

Meanwhile, an alleged criminal was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah.

Nur Islam alias Ulka, a key accused in police officer Nurul Islam murder case, was killed in Tangail “shootout”,  Superintendent of Police of the district Saleh Mohammed Tanvir told our correspondent.

Criminals shot and injured Nurul Islam, 30, an assistant sub-inspector of Tangail Model Police Station, when he was conducting a drive to arrest Ulka in the town Friday night. He died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital the following day.

After receiving information that Ulka and his associates gathered at Takia Kadma village, police launched a drive there around 5:00am today.

As soon as they reached the spot, Ulka and his gang opened fire at police, forcing them to retaliate with bullets.

Ulka came in the line of fire and died on the spot, the SP said.

His cohorts -- Shahed and Sagor -- also suffered bullet injuries during the gunfight, he said.

Shahed was hit by a bullet in his eye while Sagor in his leg, the SP added.

They were rushed to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital where condition of Shahed said to be critical.

Police recovered two foreign-made pistols from the spot. 

Ulka, chief of Ulka Bahini that runs criminal activities in the town, was accused in several criminal cases of which he has been charge-sheeted in three cases. He was on bail.

After the death of Nurul Islam, SI Rafiqul Islam filed a murder case against Ulka and 11 other people.

JHENIDAH

Monirul Islam, 35, son of Shahidul Islam of Binni village in Harinakundo upazila of the district, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Shailkupa upazila early today.

Iqbal Bahar, officer-in-charge of Shailkupa Police Station, said Monir was accused in three cases filed for murder, extortion and robbery.

Police raided Kalapukuria village around 2:00am after receiving information that Monirul was holding a clandestine meeting with his cohorts there, the OC said.

As police reached the spot, Monir and his associates opened fire targeting the law enforcers, triggering a 30-minute “gunfight”.

When all the criminals fled the scene, police found the bullet-hit body of Monir lying on the ground, the police official added.

Police recovered two firearms and a bullet from the spot.
