Constable tortures wife for money to bribe for promotion
A housewife is groaning in pain at Dinajpur Sadar Hospital, following torture allegedly by her dowry-greedy police constable husband.
The victim, Ayesha Siddiqua, 22, daughter of Abdur Rahman of Uttarashashi village under Nilphamari Sadar upazila, was married to Abul Bashar, son of Abdul Gafur of a nearby village, in 2004.
Around four and a half months ago, Ayesha made a complaint of torture against her husband Abul Bashar, working as a constable of Dinajpur police station, to Md Sarwar Murshid Shamim, the then superintendent of police (SP) of Dinajpur.
"As the SP called Bashar to his office and asked him to behave well with me to avert legal action, he apologised for torturing me. But he did not stop torturing me for dowry," Ayesha told journalists.
"On Tuesday morning, my husband mercilessly beat me for dowry. For the last one year, he continued demanding Tk 3 lakh from me, saying that he needs huge money for getting promotion to the post of ASI.
"I with my seven-year-old son Alam Ahmed Ovi rushed to Dinajpur police station but the policemen there showed reluctance to my complaint," she said.
Then Ayesha came to Dinajpur Press Club and the journalists admitted her to Dinajpur Sadar Hospital.
Abul Bashar and Ayesha Siddiqua live at a rented house at Dinajpur Satellite Town.
Ruhul Amin, SP of Dinajpur, said, "It is an allegation of criminal offence. The department will take action if a case is filed. There is no place of bribery for promotion as it is made as per one's eligibility."
Hisbut Munshi, Inspector (Investigation) of Dinajpur Police Station, who talked with Ayesha when she went to the police station on Tuesday, said they will take legal action if a case is filed regarding the incident.
Contacted, constable Abul Basar said, "I did not beat my wife. She received injuries as she accidentally collapsed on the ground while trying to snatch away my mobile phone."
