Clashes over land disputes leave one dead, 100 hurt

A man was killed and at least 100 others were injured in clashes over land disputes in Mymensingh and Habiganj districts yesterday.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reported that two groups of villagers clashed over a disputed land at Katuli village in Phulpur upazila in the morning, leaving a man killed and three others from both sides injured.

The dead was identified as Akram Hossain, 30, son of late Abul Kashem. There had been a dispute between Akram and his neighbour Rustom Ali over a land at the village.

They had an altercation over the ownership of the land at around 11:00am. Later, supporters of the two locked in a clash that left Akran dead on the spot and three others injured.

Being informed, police went to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups, said Mazharul Haque, officer-in-charge of Phulpur Police Station.

Injured Shahjahan, 25, Abdul Quddus, 50, and Abdus Salam, 60, were admitted to Phulpur Upazila Health Complex. Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was lodged with the police station concerned in the afternoon. No one was arrested as of 6:00pm yesterday.

Our Moulvibazar correspondent adds: Two groups of people clashed over a disputed land at Mokrompur village in Baniarchang upazila of Habiganj district yesterday afternoon, leaving over 98 people injured.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baniarchang Police Station said there had been a long-standing dispute between Jonab Ali and Siraj Miah of the village over a piece of land.

Supporters of the two locked in a clash over taking possession of the land at around 4:00pm. The clash left at least 100 people from both sides injured, the OC added.

They injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

No one was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this reports as of 5:00pm yesterday.
