Youths prioritise social media over studies

Reveals study at conference on mass communication, journalism

Youths spend more time on social media to communicate with peer groups rather than academic study, showed a study.

The findings of the study, conducted on 250 students from two public and two private universities, showed that nearly 89.7 percent students use Facebook more than once a day. During class, 89.8 percent students use Facebook.

Students from Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Daffodil International University (DIU) and University of Liberal Arts of Bangladesh took part in the study.

The study paper was presented by Muhammed Rashedul Hasan, senior lecturer of DIU, on the last day of a two-day National Conference on Mass Communication and Journalism in DU’s Senate building, organised by its mass communication and journalism department.

A significant number of respondents believe that spending time in social media affects their efficiency and grades while most of them found using social media as an addiction, it said. Some of them also recommended how to make social media more effective.

Speakers at the concluding ceremony also stressed the need for conducting more research in mass media.

Reading out a declaration paper in the concluding session, chairman of the department Prof Mofizur Rahman said, “The conference will help academicians, professionals and students to conduct more research.”

“The conference has given a chance for both academicians and students to broaden the knowledge of media and communication,” said Prof Dr Fahmidul Haq.

As many as 45 papers were presented in the conference, participated by academicians from different universities.
