Youth injured in police firing in capital

A 22-year-old youth was injured in a police firing near Dhaka Udyan in the capital's Adabor area early yesterday.

However, police claimed that they had fired in "self-defence".

With bullet injuries in the right knee, Sujan Mia is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Doctors said he had had a successful surgery.

Shahinur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Adabor Police Station, said, "A police patrol car stopped near gate 3 of the park around 4:30am sensing suspicious movement of a bunch of youths."

“As soon as the police team signaled them to halt, they launched an attack on police with machetes and sticks,” the OC said. In retaliation, police fired gunshots leaving Sujan injured while rest of his aides managed to flee, said the OC, adding that a sharp weapon was recovered from the spot.

A case has been filed, the police official added.
