Helena Begum who died on Thursday as muggers in a car pulled her handbag, dragged her on a street and drove the vehicle over her in the capital’s Dhanmondi area was buried yesterday at her village home at South Karapur of Raipasha-Karapur union under Barisal Sadar Upazila.

Family members and villagers after taking part in her namaz-e-janaza demanded exemplary punishment for the muggers who killed Helena, a caregiver of city’s Green Line Hospital.

While talking to this correspondent, Monirul Islam Montu, husband of the victim, said, “Muggers ended our 22-year married life within a few moments.”

“…My wife passed away in my lap,” Montu said as tears rolled down his checks. “I demand capital punishment for the killers...”

On Thursday morning, Helena Begum and her husband reached Dhaka from their village.

They reached Sadarghat by a launch around 4:30am and got off a bus in Dhanmondi Road-6 area on their way to their home on Green Road. The incident happened around 5:15am when the couple was crossing the Mirpur Road.

All of a sudden, two muggers came in the car and pulled the bag in Helena's left hand. The hand, however, got stuck in the front window and the car kept dragging her before running her over and leaving her dead.

The criminals managed to escape.
