Woman burnt 'by husband for protesting extra-marital affairs'

A woman has been burnt allegedly by her husband as she protested his “extra-marital affairs” in the capital's Mughda area.

With 25 percent burns, Reena Begum, 19, is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital till yesterday.

Her husband remained absconding since the incident occurred on June 10, said police.

Reena's mother said her daughter was set on fire while she was cooking at her sister-in-law's house.

Reena told The Daily Star at the burn unit of DMCH that her husband even stopped her from going to the bathroom to douse the fire.

Reena said she came to know about her husband's extra-marital affairs four months ago.

“…when I protested, he wanted to kill me and thus set fire to my body,” she alleged.

Enamul Huq, officer-in-charge of Mughda Police Station, yesterday said police already talked to the victim at the hospital. However, no case was filed yet, he added.
