Withdrawal of case against JU students demanded

JU pays compensation to road accident victim students’ families

Over 50 teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday held a rally before the administrative building on the campus demanding immediate withdrawal of 54 students, including 31 named, in a case filed for vandalising their vice-chancellor’s house.

Prof Naseem Akhtar Hossain, convener of Teachers-Students Unity Platform, said, “We will wage tougher movement if the authorities do not withdraw the cases against the students including 12 females.”

Meanwhile, the JU authorities gave Tk 5 lakh in compensation to each of the families of the two JU students who were killed in a road accident on May 26.

On the other hand, Kamrun Nahar Kana, sister of one of the dead students Nazmul Hossain Rana who was in marketing department, has been appointed as peon at Pritilata Hall, while Sonia Akter, sister of another victim Mehedi Hassan Arafat who was a microbiology student, has been appointed as office assistant (third grade) of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, said a press release.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam distributed the cheques and appointment letters among the families at the senate hall.

On Tuesday, 17 eminent citizens, including rights activist Khushi Kabir, in a press statement urged the JU authorities to bring back normalcy on the campus by withdrawing the cases and meeting their just demands centering death of the two students.

Earlier on May 26, Rana and Arafat were killed as a bus rammed a human-hauler carrying them on Dhaka-Aricha highway in C&B bus stand area of Savar around 5:00am. Following the incident, hundreds of students blocked the highway for two consecutive.

At least 10 people, including students, a JU official and two journalists, were injured when police and Bangladesh Chhatra Leauge JU unit activists tried to disperse the demonstrators in three incidents on May 27.

Later that day, demanding punishment for the BCL men, students laid siege to the VC's residence following which 43 students detained as the JU registrar filed the case with Ashulia Police Station.
