LAWYER BAPPI MURDER IN CTG

Wife, 3 others remanded for four days

A Chittagong court yesterday placed four people on a four-day remand each in a case filed for killing lawyer Omar Faruk Bappi.

The four are Rasheda Begum, 27, wife of Bappi; and Humayun Rashid, 28, Jakir Hossain alias Molla Jakir, 35, and Akbar Hossain Rubel, 23.

The court passed the order after they were produced before it with a seven-day remand prayer, said Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

Two other arrested -- Parvej Ali, 23, and Al Amin, 28 -- were not produced before the court as they agreed to give confessional statements under section 164 in the case, said Shahabuddin.

No lawyer stood for the four during the remand hearing, court sources said.

During primary interrogation, Rasheda admitted that she plotted the murder while the other five assisted her as Bappi refused to socially accept her as a wife.

On Saturday, Bappi, a lawyer of Chittagong District Judge Court, was found murdered in a West Bakalia residence rented by the woman in the port city.

His father Ali Ahmed filed a murder case accusing Rasheda and several other unnamed persons.
