Why no damages for Nizam's family

HC asks

The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why they should not be ordered to pay Tk 1 crore in compensation to the family of Dhaka Tribune official Nizam Uddin.

The home secretary, roads and bridges secretary, inspector general of police, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and owners of Manjil Paribahan and Srabon Paribahan have been made respondents to the rule.

The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and AKM Zahirul Hoque issued the suo moto rule following newspaper reports.

Nazim Uddin, a senior executive of the advertisement department of English daily Dhaka Tribune, was killed after being knocked down and run over amid a race between two buses of on Mayor Hanif Flyover in Dhaka on May 18.

SC lawyer Advocate ABM Golam Mustafa placed the reports yesterday before the HC bench for necessary order.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed Ohidul and Kamal, driver of Sraban Paribahan and helper of Manjil Paribahan respectively, on one-day remands each in the case filed over the death of Nazim Uddin.

However, no lawyers on behalf of the accused were present in the court.
