In compliance with a High Court order, Department of Environment (DoE) today started its drive to cut off electricity and gas connections to the tanneries at Hazaribagh in Dhaka.

The drive began around 9:00am, Mir Alimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The High Court on March 6 directed the director general of the DoE to immediately close the tanneries that are running at Hazaribagh and have failed to relocate to the Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar.

The court also ordered the DG to disconnect the utility services, including gas, power and water, to the tanneries as they were damaging the environment violating the court's earlier directives.
